Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund alumni ran the show coming back to serve as panelists, volunteers, and back up mentors. Mentors and students were able to ask the alumni about their college challenges and experiences as the current class of HDSF students prepare to head to college. Both a charity sports event and community festival, the tournament celebrated the organizations year-long mentoring, academic scholarship fundraising and community building efforts that connect inner city DC public high school students with area business professionals. Throughout the day, more than 1,000 participants huddled in front of the US Capitol for a bit of friendly competition, fun and community building. Cynthia Dinkins, President of the Sheila Johnson Foundation and the Washington Mystics Foundation, kicked us off with her message to the students about how she has achieved all that she has as a single parent. Second, Jack Evans, Councilmember for Ward 2, shared his story as a single parent and how he got to where he is today. Jack Evans has been a longtime Hoop Dreams supporter and during his time as Councilmember he has continued to lobby for Hoop Dreams to receive money from the DC Government. After a lot of hard work Hoop Dreams was awarded $500,000 from the DC Government and Councilmember Evans made the check presentation at the workshop!
